Sinus Headache
C - deep, constant, throbbing pain in one specific area of face or head
O - occurs with or after a cold or acute sinusitis
L - may occur in one area of face or along eyebrow ridge and below the cheek bone
D - lasts until associated condition is improved
S - may be moderately severe
P - pain worse with sudden movements of the head
A - nasal drainage, congestion, fever, and foul-smelling breath
Cluster Headache
C - stabbing pain
O - sudden onset,; precipitated by ingesting alcohol
L - localized in the eye and orbit and radiating to the facial and temporal regions
D - late evening or night
S - intense
P - movement or walking back and forth may relieve the discomfort
A - occurs more in young males
Tension Headache
C - dull, tight, diffuse
O - may occur with stress, anxiety, or depression
L - located in the frontal, temporal, occipital region
D - lasts days, months, or years
S - aching
P - local heat, massage, analgesics, anti-depressants, and muscle relaxants may relieve symptoms
A - affects women more often than men
Migraine Headache
C - accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to noise or light
O - precipitated by emotional disturbances, anxiety, or ingestion of alcohol or other substances the client is sensitive to
L - around eyes, temples, cheeks, or forehead; may affect only one side of the face
D - up to 3 days
S - throbbing, severe
P - rest may bring relief
A - occurs more often in women
Acromegaly
- enlargement of the facial features (nose, ears) and the hands and feet
- non-cancerous tumor of the pituitary gland
- seen in Paget’s disease
Cushing’s Syndrome
- moon-shaped face with reddened cheeks and increased facial hair
Scleroderma
tightened-hard face with thinning facial skin
Bell’s Palsy
one-sided facial paralysis
Hyperthyroidism
exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs) is seen in hyperthyroidism
