Head and Neck 1 Flashcards
Bones of skull Nerve and blood supply of head and neck
Name the cranial bones (7)
Ethmoid (1) Frontal (1) Occipital (1) Parietal (1) Sphenoid (1) Temporal (2)
Name the facial bones (14)
Lacrimal (2) Maxilla (2) Nasal (2) Inferior concha (2) Palatine (2) Vomer (1) Zygoma (2) Mandible (1)
What are the 3 cranial sutures?
Coronal (across the crown), sagittal (right down the middle) and lambdoid (at the back)
They are joining points for the skull
What is the purpose of cranial sutures?
Allow the bones to slide over (fuse later in childhood) in new-born babies so they can fit through the birth canal
What are fontanelles and where are they located?
Where the sutures join
One at the front (coronal/sagittal) and one at the back (sagittal/lambdoid)
At what age does the posterior fontanelle close over?
2-3 months old
At what age does the anterior fontanelle close over?
~2 years old
Which cranial bone does the olfactory nerve pass through?
Ethmoid bone
Where is the occipital bone located?
Spans the back of the skull
Where is the foramen magnum located?
In the middle of the occipital bone
What is the foramen magnum?
A hole in the base of the skull which the spinal cord passes through
Which bone is described as being ‘butterfly shaped’?
Sphenoid bone
Which bones act as a crash impact barrier?
Zygoma (cheekbones)
What are the 2 parts of the temporal bone
Petrous part
Spongy part
What can tumours in the maxilla affect?
Vision, maxillary teeth
Where do the middle ear bone, cochlea and semi-circular canals sit?
Petrous part of the temporal bone
What is the weakest part of the skull?
Pterion - middle meningeal artery sits under the pterion
Risk of extradural haemorrhage
Describe the lacrimal bone
Very thin bone, injury to this bone can disturb position of the eyeball
Which nerve passes through the optic foramen?
Optic nerve
Where is the optic foramen located?
Sphenoid bone
Which nerves pass through the superior orbital fissure?
Oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, trigeminal nerve and abducens nerve (CN III, IV, Va, VI)
Which artery supplies 80% of all brain blood supply?
Internal carotid artery
goes all the way to brain, does not branch
Which artery supplies the face? (or exterior of head and neck)
External carotid artery
branched
Where do the internal and external carotid arteries branch from?
Arch of aorta -> common carotid artery -> splits into 2: internal and external carotid artery
