Head Anatomy Flashcards
Functions of the Cerebrum (5)
Motor function Sensory info Special sense Cognition Memory
Functions of Cerebellum (3)
Balance
Coordination
Smooth, synergistic muscle control
Functions of Diencephalon (4)
Routing info to appropriate areas
Body temperature regulation
Maintain H2O balance
Emotional control
Functions of the Brain Stem (3)
Heart rate regulation
Respiratory regulation
Control of peripheral blood flow
Layers of the Meninges (3)
Dura Mater
Arachnoid Mater
Pia Mater
Arterial and venous blood supplies are provided by these structures and production and introduction of CSF occur here.
Dura Mater
Outermost covering
Meningeal arteries supply blood to cranial bones
Arachnoid Mater
Thin fibers, yet resilient to trauma
Separated from Dura mater by sub dural space
Below arachnoid mater is sub-arachnoid space, contains CSF
Pia Mater
Innermost meninge, envelops brain
Follows brains contour, protruding into its fissures and sulci
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Originates from Choroid Plexus
Slowly circulates around brain and spinal cord
Allows CNS to “float” within the body
Acts as another buffer from outside forces
Blood Circulation
Brain uses 20% of the body’s O2 for each degree the body’s core increases, its O2 need increases by 7%
What are the bones of the skull? (6)
Frontal Parietal Temporal Occipital Sphenoid Zygomatic
