Head Flashcards
Name the 4 joins found in the head region
Temperomandibular join
-synovial
-lots of movement
Mandibular symphysis
-no movement in dogs
-cartilaginous joint between hyoid apparatus and temporal bone
Sutures- found in young animals between bones allowing growth. Appear as irregular lines
Describe the parotid salivary gland
Lies at the junction of head and neck below ear
When viewed from surface it is v-shaped
Coarsely lobulated
Fills retromandibular fossa
Medially regulated to branches of common carotid artery, maxillary vein, hyoid apparatus
trigeminal nerves and lymph nodes
Parotid duct cross lateral surface of masseter and inserts on upper cheek
Describe the Sublingual salivary gland
Monostomatic part empties into the sublingual duct which accompanies the mandibular duct and opens onto sublingual caruncle
Describe the zygomatic gland
Located central to the zygomatic arch Found on in dogs and cats Surrounded by fat so appears lobular One major duct opens caudally to last upper cheek tooth Four minor ducts
Mandibular salivary gland
Found ventral to the parotid salivary gland
Unilobular
Attached to sublingual salivary gland
Duct runs in between the mylohyoid and hyoglossus muscles
Opens on floor of mouth
