Q

Describe a fibrous joint

A

They are mostly found in the skull- sutures
Allow growth of the skull in young animals through extension of individual bones at their margins
Narrow strip of tissue outlines and unites the margins of the bone
Eventually they are eliminated when ossification extends across the membrane after growth
Allows little or no movement

Q

Describe the syndemoses type of fibrous joint

A

Found when two bones face each other joined by connective tissue ligaments
Found between the shafts of the radius and the ulna

Q

Describe a cartilaginous joint

A

Properly known as a syndondroses
Are joints between the epiphysis and diaphysis of young long bones and joints at the base of the skull
•most are temporary

Q

Describe a permanent syndondroses

A

A type of cartilaginous joint found between the skull and the hyoid apparatus
Much movement in some species

Q

Describe a synovial joint

A

Articular bones separated by a fluid filled cavity, the joint cavity
Additional tissue bands (ligaments)
•used to position the bone and restrict movement to required directions and extents
•some are thickenings of the joint capsule

Q

What role does the periosteum play in the synovial joint

A

It is a continuation of the fibrous capsule

Provides strength for the synovial membrane externally

Q

What role does the articular surface play in the synovial joint

A

The articular surface is covered in hyaline cartilage

It is used to absorb shock and reduce friction during movement

Q

Describe the role of the sleeve of delicate CT attaching around the periphery of the articular surface known as the SYNOVIAL MEMBRANE

A

The synovial membrane makes synovial fluid

For lubrication

Q

What is the function of the menisci

A

Provide congruence for incompatible joint surfaces
Resolve complex movements into simpler ones
To provide some shock absorption
