Hazards - Volcanoes Flashcards
Features of volcanoes - crator
hole at the top of volcanoes
Features of volcanoes - magma chamber
large pool of molten rock found beneath the earths crust
Features of volacnoes - vent
The thin, narrow pipe running down the centre of a volcano
Location of volcanos
- Found along fault lines or tectonic plates and between plate boundaries
Destructive plate boundary
continent and ocean plate move towards eachother
constructive plate boundary
2 ocean plates move away from eachother
How are volcanoes formed from destructive plate boundaries?
oceanic plate is heavier so is forced underneath the continent which generates heat causing the continent to melt. Then the melted molten rock can be forced to the surface of the earth forming a volcano
Volcano case study - Name and when it happened
Mt St Helens - 18th may 1980
causes of eruption
Destructive plate boundary
Impacts on people and landscape
- loud blast causes noise pollution
- heat from eruption melted snow and ice released lots of litres of water
- local people evacuated from home
- 57 total deaths
- damage results in billions to rebuild
- eruption knocked out telphone lines (no way to call for help)
- mud flow choked rivers killing all life
- flights were cancelled because of poisonous gases and ash
Methods of predicting the erutpion
- seismographs
- tiltmeters
- satelites
methods of planning for the eruption
- evacuation plans in place
- disaster kits with first aid supplies
- education so people know hwo to protect themselves
Aid given to manage the impact
- volcano sirens
- air travel suspended
- stranded people rescued
- new tourist facilities built
- compensation given to farmers
- food + water
- eruption warnings
