Glaciation Flashcards
1
Q
Plucking
A
when ice freezes onto rocks and rips the rocks out as the glacier moves
2
Q
Abrasion
A
when ice scrapes along the land eroding it like sandpaper
3
Q
Freeze thaw weathering
A
- water enters cracks in rocks
- water freezes and widens the rock
- pressure breaks up the rocks into scree.
4
Q
Formation of U - shaped valley
A
- snow fall into a v-shaped valley and turns to ice
- abrasion and plucking steepen deepen and widen the valley.
- the valley is now a U-shape
- The ice melts leaving a misfit stream or ribbon lake in the middle of the valley.
5
Q
Formation of a corrie
A
- snow falls into a north-facing hollow
- pluycking and abrasion steep deepen and widen the hollow
- scree is formed due to freeze thaw weathering
- the ice melts leaving a tarn in the middle of the armchair shaped hollow.
6
Q
Formation of an Arete
A
- snow fall into 2 seperate hollows side to side.
- the snow turns to ice erodes both hollows
- As ice erodes both hollows this steepens the sides creating an arete
7
Q
Formation of a pyramid peek
A
- snow fall into 3 seperate hollows
- the snow turns to ice and erodes the hollows
- this steepns the sides
- This creates a pyramid peek at the top of all three aretes
