Hazards Theory 2 Flashcards
How is risk calculated?
Risk = Hazard × Vulnerability / Capacity to Cope
Hazard:
The likelihood of a natural event occurring.
Vulnerability:
The extent to which people and property are exposed.
Capacity to Cope:
The resources and abilities to manage the hazard effectively.
What is vulnerability?
Vulnerability refers to the degree to which a person, community, or system is likely to experience harm from a hazard due to exposure and lack of ability to cope.
What factors make a population more vulnerable?
More Vulnerable:
Poverty and lack of resources.
Poor-quality housing and infrastructure.
Lack of education or awareness.
Weak governance and disaster planning.
What factors make a population less vulnerable?
Less Vulnerable:
Advanced technology and warning systems.
Disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Well-educated populations.
Effective disaster management and response systems.
