Hazards Theory Flashcards
What is a hazard?
A hazard is a threat of a naturally occurring or human-made event that has the potential to cause harm to people, property, and the environment.
What are the categories of hazards?
Geological: Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides.
Climatic: Hurricanes (tropical cyclones), droughts, tornadoes,
floods.
Biological: Epidemics (e.g., Ebola, COVID-19), locust infestations.
Technological: Oil spills, nuclear accidents, industrial fires.
Natural Event:
A naturally occurring process, such as a volcanic eruption or rainfall, that does not affect humans directly.
Natural Hazard:
A natural event that threatens people or property, such as an earthquake near a populated area.
Natural Disaster:
When a natural hazard causes significant damage, injuries, or fatalities, such as the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
Quasi-Natural Hazard:
A hazard influenced by human activity, e.g., deforestation increasing landslide risk.
