Hazards Associated With Volcanoes: Flashcards
What is a LAHAR?
A mixture of volcanic material and water that forms a mudflow.
How does a LAHAR occur?
When lava comes in contact with weather sources such as rivers.
How dangerous is a LAHAR?
The MOST dangerous/deadliest.
What does a LAHAR do?
Erodes life/objects in it’s path, taking anything and everything with it & gaining speed (up to 60km/h or more).
What are POISONOUS GAS EMISSIONS?
Varied mix of gases in any volcanic eruption, such as Sulfuric Acid, Hydrogen Sulfide, Hydrogen Chloride & Hydrogen Bromide
IMPACT of POISONOUS GAS EMISSIONS?
-Damaged eyes
-Carbon Dioxide = Global WARMING
-Sulfur Dioxide = Global COOLING
-Death
CHARACTERISTICS OF: A Convergent Volcano
-Magma rich in silica
-More viscous
-More Explosive
CHARACTERISTICS OF: A Divergent Volcano
-Magma low in silica
-Flows easily
-More Effusive
CHARACTERISTICS OF: Explosive Volcano
-Found at subduction zones
-Low-temperature magma
-High viscosity
-Felsic
-Hard to predict eruptions
-Forms composite volcanoes
-Very destructive
CHARACTERISTICS OF: Effusive Volcanoes
-Generally occurs at hotspots
-Mantle comes directly to the surface
-Hot lava
-Low viscosity
-Very mafic
-Flows easily
-Forms Shield & Flood Basalt volcanoes
How does a HAZARD become a DISASTER?
The geological event must affect humans & exceed thee ability of society to cope with hazard.
