Earthquakes Flashcards
Where do DIVERGENT boundaries occur?
In regions where the oceanic lithosphere is thinner than the continental lithosphere.
What kind of earthquakes are at DIVERGENT boundaries?
Fairly shallow kinds of earthquakes.
What are the foci of earthquakes at DIVERGENT boundaries?
30km
Why are the earthquakes at DIVERGENT boundaries shallow?
the crust is not very thick
When CONVERGENT boundaries come together we get:
1) Fold mountains e.g. continental-continental plate, The Himalayas.
2) Subduction Zones (this is when oceanic crust is going under other oceanic crust or under continental crust).
What are the foci of earthquakes at CONVERGENT boundaries?
670km.
What types of impact do individuals reacher at CONVERGENT earthquakes?
Due to the larger magnitude, there is a higher increase in devastation for human life.
