Hazards Associated With Earthquakes: Flashcards
What is a geological hazard?
A situation that endangers people & property as a result of a geological process.
What is GROUND MOTION?
The Earth’s shake as the seismic waves are released.
(These waves vibrate from an earthquake’s focus in a circular fashion, like the ripple from a rock hitting the still water of a pond)
Example of GROUND MOTION?
Turkey Earthquake - 2020 (Building collapse)
What are the 3 Types of WAVES?
1) Primary
2) Secondary
3) Love
Where do Love Waves travel?
Only travel along the surface of Earth.
Where do Primary and secondary Waves travel?
Travel through the body of the Earth.
What is LIQUEFACTION?
Saturated or partially saturated soil at or near the ground surface that loses strength in response to strong ground shaking.
Example of LIQUEFACTION?
Japan 1964 Earthquake - LIQUEFACTION destroyed many buildings.
What are LANDSLIDES?
The movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope.
Landslides are a type of “mass wasting,” which denotes any down-slope movement of soil and rock under the direct influence of gravity.
How are LANDSLIDES caused?
The pressure of groundwater in the slope due to percolation.
When does a TSUNAMI occur?
Occurs when a displacement of the sea floor displaces the water above it, generating large waves.
Causes of TSUNAMIS:
-Earthquakes on the ocean floor
-Volcanic eruption
-Underwater erosion
-Astroid hitting the ocean
