What is WHMIS?
A program designed to ensure you have all the information you need to work safely with hazardous materials that are used, stored or manufactured at your workplace.
What 3 categories of individuals play a part of responsibility in the WHMIS path?
Supplier, Employer, Worker
Define what a supplier is
Organizations that sell or import hazardous products.
What are the supplier’s responsibilities?
- Ensure that hazardous products are appropriately classified as per the Hazardous Products Regulations. (HPR)
- Label the product or container with a WHMIS supplier label.
- Provide a safety data sheet SDS) to the customer.
- Update the SDS whenever there is new information or change to a product.
What are the employer’s responsibilities?
- Educate and train workers on the hazards and safe use of products.
- Provide all information available for hazardous products
What information must employer’s provide about hazardous materials?
- Ensure that hazardous products are properly labeled.
- Prepare workplace labels as needed.
- Prepare SDS as needed (such as for a hazardous product manufactured on site.
- Ensure appropriate control measure are in place to protect the health and safety of workers.
What information should workers know about hazardous products they work with?

What is a physical hazard group?
Products that are dangerous because they can cause damage due to fire or explosion.
What is a health hazard group?
Hazardous products that are hazardous because they can cause health effects from mild irritants to toxicity causing death.
