- 7 reactors at fukushima nuclear power stations melted -> levels of radiation were 8x higher

- japan released a tsunami warning 3 mins after the earthquake
- scientists deleted tsunami after the earthquake by using modelling and forecasting technology
- government declared a 20km evacuation zone around the fukushima nuclear power plant to reduce threat of radiation

- added a new law which promotes development of tsunami resistant communities based on the concept of multiple defences which combines infrastructure development
- central government decided a coastal protection policy, such as sea walls and breakwaters
