  • 12 january 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck haiti, leaving its capital port-au-prince devastated

A
  • 316,000 people died and a further more 300,000 injured
  • many houses were poorly built and collapsed - instantly 1 million made homeless
  • the port, communication links and major roads were damaged beyond repair

A
  • water systems destroyed - a cholera outbreak and killed over 8000 people
  • port was destroyed making it hard to get aid to an area
  • Haiti’s important clothing factories were damaged - these provided 60% of haitis exports / 1 in 5 jobs were lost

  • USA sent rescue teams and 10,000 troops
  • bottled water and purification tablets were provided
  • 235,000 people were moved away from port-au-prince to less damages cities
