A
- 12 january 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck haiti, leaving its capital port-au-prince devastated
- happened on a conservative plate boundary

what are primary effects
A
- 316,000 people died and a further more 300,000 injured
- many houses were poorly built and collapsed - instantly 1 million made homeless
- the port, communication links and major roads were damaged beyond repair

what are secondary effects
A
- water systems destroyed - a cholera outbreak and killed over 8000 people
- port was destroyed making it hard to get aid to an area
- Haiti’s important clothing factories were damaged - these provided 60% of haitis exports / 1 in 5 jobs were lost

what are immediate responses
A
- USA sent rescue teams and 10,000 troops
- bottled water and purification tablets were provided
- 235,000 people were moved away from port-au-prince to less damages cities
- £20 million was donated by uk government

- new homes were built to a better standard
- port needed rebuilding, which required large amounts of investment
