What is the original purpose of the Haka?

A

. Practiced prior to battle and to retell stories of past victories
Additionals Points:
. Helps them spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. They do it with immense pride and that is what the haka gives them – very meaningful and special.
. Terrifies the enemy - Issuing a challenge and celebrating a victory. Pu Kuna – the act of defense exhibited by the protruding tongue. Bring it on.

Why is the Haka so important to New Zealand sport?

A

Purpose of the HAKA in New Zealand sport - All Blacks Team (Maori Chief)
. Intimidate the opposition
. Ensures a shared sporting spirit - when they do the Haka it gives an opportunity for them to look along the line of players and really connect with the man next to us. Spiritually gaining strength from the guys, from the ground we stand on beside us and getting their positive energy going. Draw strength from those who wore the jersey before and who performed the Haka. United as a team when they perform the Haka. Pride in their heritage.
. whatever the size of the opponent they will play hard - when the team goes out and plays against other countries two or four times larger than us we strive to survive and uphold ourselves – our mana, our integrity
