Harvesting Energy in Cells Flashcards
Photosynthesis is like
is like eating
cellular respiration is the process
by which cells break down organic compounds an produce ATP
organic compounds plus oxygen results in
co2 + water + ATP
autotrophs and heterotrophs
misleading photosynthesis in reverse products in cell respiration are
the reactions in photosynthesis
the products of photosynthesis are reactants in
cell respiration
sunlight starts photosynthesis in the
chlorplasts
photosynthesis produces
oxygen and glucose
oxygen and glucose from photosynthesis go into
cellular respiration
cell respiration occurs in the
mitochondrion
cell respiration outputs
co2 and h2o which go back into photosynthesis
2 possible pathways
cell respiration and fermentation
cell respiration has organic compounds go into glycolysis producing
pyruvic acid and ATP
if oxygen is present the second step of glycolysis is
aerobic respiration results in c02 and h20 results in atp
if no oxygen present glycolysis results in
fermentation of organic compounds; the pyruvic acid and atp go thru anaerobic pathways resulting in lactic acid and ethyl alcohol and other compounds
glycolysis occurs in the
cytosol
in glycolysis the six carbon glucose plus oxygen results in
2 three carbon pyruvic acid net yield 2 atp plus 1 glucose with the net yield of 2 ATP per 1 glucose
if oxygen not present pyruvic acid results in
lactic acid, ethyl alcohol, NAD+ NO ATP, but NAD+ is made so glycolysis can continue
2 types of fermentation
lactic acid and alcoholic fermentation
alcoholic fermentation is common is
yeast
in lactic acid fermentation, glucose goes into glycolysis then pyruvic acid then
lactic acid the nadh+ and H+ results in NAD+
in alcoholic fermentations glucose goes into glycolysis into pyruvic acid a co2 spins off and results in 2 carbon compound continuing resulting in
ethyl alcohol
fermentation through glycolysis only 2 percent of the energy availabie is
captured as ATP; much of the energy in glucose is held in pyruvic acid
glycolysis alone or as part of fermentation is
not very efficient
aerobic respiration occurs in the
mitochnondria
in aerobic respiration
oxygen must be present or it goes to fermentation
2 stages in aerobic respiration
mitochondira (oxygen must be present or goes to fermentation) –
stages
Kreb’s cycle or electron transport chain
Krebs cycle occurs n
mitochondrial mix and makes NADH
electron transport chain occurs in
inner membrane NADH results in ATP
