What is a cadence?
A
A progression of two chords, found at the end of a musical phrase.

Perfect Cadence:
A
- Uses chords V > 1
- Sounds complete and always stops on the tonic chord. Both chords are major.

Imperfect Cadence:
A
- Lands on chord V e.g 1 > V or II > V.
- Sounds incomplete. The 2nd chord is always chord V of the key, which is major. The 1st chord can be major or minor.

Plagal Cadence:
A
- Uses chords IV > I
- Sounds complete and finishes on chord 1. Both chords are major.
- Known as the ‘amen’ cadence is it is often found at the end of hymns.
