Hardware and Networks Flashcards
Dissecting a system
Hardware is in the system
What is a transistor?
a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electronic signals
What is Moores Law ?
an observation and projection of a historical trend. Rather than a law of physics, it is an empirical relationship linked to gains from experience in production
- Moore’s law in the observation that the number of transistor in a dense integrated circuit doubles approx every two years- hardware is improving drastically
Connecting Systems
- systems do not operate in isolation
- this requires systems to be connected to each other, sending data to each other in an understandable format
- a network enables this connectivity and communication through standard protocols
What is disruptive technology ?
they are innovations that replaces normal operations with a more effective way to do things
examples
- electricity service
-ecommerce
-GPS
-Ride share apps
- creates a new way of doing things that initially may not meet the needs of existing customers
What is sustaining technologies ?
improve product performance
- involve improving a product that has an establish role in the market
- more generally evolving by improving the performance of what they are doing and improving the functionalities (types of things it can do)
- creates an improved product that customers are willing to buy
Evolution v revolution (disruptive v sustaining)
sustaining: continuous, evolutionary, conservative
Disruptive: gamechanging, breakthrough, radical
Sustaining technologies effects on business
tend to provide us with better, faster and cheaper products in establish markets
- virtually never lead in markets opened by new and disruptive technologies
Disruptive technologies effects on business
redefine the competitive playing fields of their respective markets
disruptive technologies tend to open new markets and destroy old ones
disruptive technologies typically cut into the law and of the marketplace and eventually evolve to displace its competitors with new technologies
