Hard Flashcards

1
Q

How can we use different amorphous form to increase solubility of a poorly soluble drug (2)

A
  • Amorphous forms have lower stability due to lack of range order
  • This makes them more soluble and less stable = dissolve quicker

Q

Two reasons why a drug is formulated as hydrochloride rather than as a base (2)

A
  • Salt form enhances water solubility, making it easier to dissolve
  • This improves extent of absorption
  • HCL salt is more water soluble than bases which have poor solubility

Q

Describe three physiology factors which effect drug absorption

A
  • Faster gastric emptying can enhance absorption but excessive motility like diarrhoea can reduce it
  • Food can increase if its fatty, or it can delay it
  • Other drugs may increase transit time (enhances absorption)

Q

How does particle size effect drug properties

A
  • Drug bioavailability (dissolution)
  • Settling rate (suspensions)
  • When making homogenous mixture e.g. if particles are different sizes its hard to mix evenly
  • Flowability - powder flow is inversely proportional to particle size
