Hands Free Positioning Flashcards
What are the four goals of radiography?
- Do no harm to the patient!
- No harm to humans!
- Generate accurate/diagnostic images.
- Be time efficient/cost effective
Give four examples of what can happen to person exposed to low levels of radiation
- Increase incidence of neoplasia
- Specific increases in the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma
- Increase in the frequency of occurrence of leukemia
- Premature ageing (cataracts)
WA state law states:
“When an animals or film must be held in position during radiography, _____ should be used”
When an animals or film must be held in position during radiography, mechanical supporting or restraining devices should be used
What is the “inverse double rule”?
If you double your distance from the primary beam, then exposure us decreased to 1/4.
What about getting radiographs taken might make the patient anxious or scared? (3)
- Strange equipment
- Being placed on table tops
- Being place in unnatural & possibly uncomfortable positions
What are three thing to utilize while working with a patient in radiology?
- Chemical restraint/pharmacology (sedation or pain control)
- Utilize anatomy
- Restraint devices
Horizontal beam is used for..?
Radiographs of patients that are not easily positioned in lateral recumbency or evaluation of fluids/gas
What are four steps of setting up for a horizontal radiograph?
- Rotate tube head 90 degrees
- Measure correct distance (40in) from tube head cassette (SID) for tech being utilized
- Have cassette perpendicular to x-ray beam in cassette holder
- Try to keep at least 4ft away (or more)!
What is a catatonic state?
When a patient is put in a position or pressure points that make them very still
Why should we (normally) reframe using the catatonic state?
Some research has shown that this state is a terror response. Consult with DVM before using ESPCIALLY on a rabbit or iguana
What are “blinders”?
This decreases partial vision of the patient and can help calm them. Towels, commercial blinders, and other homemade (paper cups) work well.
Cats, horses, birds, snakes/lizards (& many more) do well with this.
What sedatives/anesthetics have reversal agents? (4)
- Demedomidine (Dexdomitor)
- All opiates (like narcan)
- Benzodiapines (Valium)
- Xylazine
What to know about sandbags: (3)
- Create a “valley” in the middle to minimize direct weight on patient
- Use/have 3-4 available per patient
- Have a variety of sizes & weights
Using troughs & cradles: (4)
- Have a variety
- Try to have ‘radiolucite’ troughs & be aware of space created from cassette to patient
- If it lefts the patient, keep marker at patient level to show degree of magnification
- Types: gel, plastic, foam, etc
How to use tape: (3)
- Medical tape can be used but not in the primary beam. It is radiopaque! Masking tape recommended.
- Do not use medical tape on birds!! It will remove feathers
- Be sure to not apply to tightly
