Q

Give four examples of what can happen to person exposed to low levels of radiation

A
  1. Increase incidence of neoplasia
  2. Specific increases in the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma
  3. Increase in the frequency of occurrence of leukemia
  4. Premature ageing (cataracts)

Q

What is the “inverse double rule”?

A

If you double your distance from the primary beam, then exposure us decreased to 1/4.

Q

What are four steps of setting up for a horizontal radiograph?

A
  1. Rotate tube head 90 degrees
  2. Measure correct distance (40in) from tube head cassette (SID) for tech being utilized
  3. Have cassette perpendicular to x-ray beam in cassette holder
  4. Try to keep at least 4ft away (or more)!

Q

Why should we (normally) reframe using the catatonic state?

A

Some research has shown that this state is a terror response. Consult with DVM before using ESPCIALLY on a rabbit or iguana

Q

What are “blinders”?

A

This decreases partial vision of the patient and can help calm them. Towels, commercial blinders, and other homemade (paper cups) work well.
Cats, horses, birds, snakes/lizards (& many more) do well with this.

Q

What to know about sandbags: (3)

A
  1. Create a “valley” in the middle to minimize direct weight on patient
  2. Use/have 3-4 available per patient
  3. Have a variety of sizes & weights

Q

Using troughs & cradles: (4)

A
  1. Have a variety
  2. Try to have ‘radiolucite’ troughs & be aware of space created from cassette to patient
  3. If it lefts the patient, keep marker at patient level to show degree of magnification
  4. Types: gel, plastic, foam, etc

Q

How to use tape: (3)

A
  1. Medical tape can be used but not in the primary beam. It is radiopaque! Masking tape recommended.
  2. Do not use medical tape on birds!! It will remove feathers
  3. Be sure to not apply to tightly

Q

How many points of contact should you have on a patient when restraining with straps (etc)

A

At least two! This way you can prevent cutting off circulation

17
Q

T/F: Foam, gel pads/wedges, towels & cotton can enhance patient comfort and prevent pressure points

A

True!

18
Q

What can be used as a compression paddle?
It will enhance locations such as..?

A
  1. Wooden spoons or Lucite spoons.
  2. It can enhance locations such as joints, the urinary bladder, and uterus.
19
Q

What are four things to keep in mind while using compression paddles or straps?

A
  1. Compression surface should be 1.5x the area of the target organ.
  2. Collimate to only the area of interest
  3. Compression will decrease the subject thickness, so adjust accordingly!
  4. Do NOT use if it may injure the patient
20
Q

Bonus: What is the most successful hands-free radiography tip?

A

Patience and Zen manner!
