What 5 cases requiring child protection will the NCSO work with DFS?
- Physical abuse
- Sexual Abuse
- Neglect
- Drug endangered children
- Significant instances of violence or criminal conduct where a child witnesses physical violence or instances of repeated domestic violence
What does neglect include?
caregivers under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, abandonment, mental illness, or other circumstances that result in the caregivers inability to care for the child
What is considered a runaway?
Any juvenile under 18 years of age whom purposefully leaves home to escape parental custody and or guidance
What 4 things must be done upon determining a juvenile has ran away?
- Complete a report
- Transmit a description and issue a pickup order on the juvenile
- Notifying the reporting parent or guardian that they must arrange the return or the child if located outside Natrona County
- Arrange entry into NCIC
What will happen if a runaway juvenile cannot be returned to their legal parent or guardian?
DFS and/or the District Attorneys Office will be contacted for placement
What 5 factors should be considered when determining disposition of a juvenile?
- Safety of the public
- Safety of the juvenile
- Best interest of the juvenile and the community
- Seriousness of the offense
- Juveniles prior criminal history
How shall a juvenile be citied?
In the same manner as those issued to an adult and the juvenile’s legal parents or guardian shall be notified
How shall juveniles be searched?
In the same legal guidelines set forth for adults
What 4 conditions constitute an arrest of a juvenile?
- Any valid court warrant or order
- Probable cause felonies
- DWUI Arrests
- Best interest of the child after all attempts for placement at YCC and with parents have been exhausted and DA approves.
What condition can you arrest a juvenile without first contacting the DA and securing permission to do so?
A Warrant
What must be done if a juvenile is taken into custody?
The legal parent or guardian
When can an Officer take a child into protective custody?
Whenever it appears that a child is endangered due to parent neglect, abuse, drug use, or alcohol use
Who will the Deputy contact for placement?
DFS
