What are intrinsic muscles of the hand responsible for?
Muscles in the hand itself
Responsible for the fine motor functions of the hand
What are extrinsic muscles of the hand responsible for?
Located in the anterior and posterior compartments of the forearm
They control finger flexion and extension and movements of the wrist
Muscles of the thenar eminence
Abductor pollicis
Abductor pollicis brevis
Flexor pollicis brevis
Opponens pollicis
Innervation of the thenar eminence
Median nerve
Ulnar nerve = adductor pollicis
Muscles of the hypothenar eminence
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Abductor digit minimi
Opponens digiti minimi
Innervation of the hypothenar eminence
Ulnar nerve
Attachment of the lumbricals
Tendons of flexor digitorum profundus
Innervation of the lumbricals
Median nerve: lateral 2 lumbricals
Ulnar nerve: medial 2 lumbricals
Action of the lumbricals
Flex MCP and extend PIP and DIP joints
Action of the interossei
Abduction of the digits: dorsal interossei (DAB)
Adduction of the digits: palmar interossei (PAD)
All flex MCPS and extend IPJs
Innervation of the interossei
