1 tab daily
How to start if new?
start on day 1 of period - don’t need additional cover
days 2-5 - will need barrier for first 7 days
How to start after COC (tab/patch)?
no break - start next day
after HFI - need barrier for 7 days
How to start after POP?
no break, start next day
How to start after miscarriage/abortion?
asap or within 5 days
after 5 days - barrier for 7 days
How to start after birth?
start up to 21 days after birth
> 21 - barrier for 7 days
How to start after EHC?
Levonorgestrel
- start straight away & barrier for 7 days
Ulipristal
- wait 5 days after taking & barrier
- take & use barrier for additional 7 days - 12 days barrier in total
age restrictions for desogestrel
Hana = over 18yrs
Lovima = no age restriction
Can desogestrel be used while breastfeeding?
YES
contraindications
- Sex steroid malignancies (breast, uterine, ovarian)
- Active venous thromboembolic disorder
- Pregnancy
- Hx hepatic disease if LFTs not back to normal
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
- Hypersensitivity to substance/excipients
- HANA - SOY OR PEANUT ALLERGY
referral for desogestrel
- significant interaction -> anticonvulsants, St. John’s wort
- Hx thrombosis or breast cancer
- diabetes
- uncontrolled hypertension
- s/e -> depression, thrombosis, allergy, liver disease, breast cancer, ectopic pregnancy
- due to have surgery or immobile
Allergies with Hana
soy or peanut
s/e of desogestrel
- Irregular bleeding pattern
- Altered mood
- Headache
- Nausea
- Acne
- Breast pain/tenderness
- Amenorrhoea
- Weight changes
counselling for desogestrel
- s/e
- report severe abdominal/chest pain/DVT/headache
- missed pill rules
