What do hair follicles do?
• Produce hair
What is the hair bulb?
It’s the expanded end of the hair follicle
What is root plexus?
Knot of sensory nerves around the hair bulb
What does the arrector pili muscle do?
Hair strands erect when arrector pili contracts
What is hair consistent of?
Dead keratinized cells
Where & what do Sebaceous glands do?
• Over entire body, except palms & soles
• Secrete Sebum - an oily substance
• Most are associated with a hair follicle
What do Sebum do?
Collects dirt; softens and lubricates hair & skin
What are the two types of sweat glands?
Eccrine gland & Apocrine gland
What are 4 must know facts of sweat glands?
• Widely distributed on body
• Sweat- is a blood filtrate
• Sweat is 99% water with some salts
• Traces of metabolic wastes
Function of Eccrine gland?
•Most numerous- produce true sweat (open directly to the surface of the skin)
Aprocrine gland:
• Locations?
• Describe the sweat that it produces?
• Located in axillary, anal, & genital areas
• Produces sweat that contains oil or bacteria
