Cartilage Flashcards
Types of Cartilage
• Hyaline cartilage
• Elastic Cartilage
• Fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage:
• Function?
• Appearance?
• Locations?
• Provides support through flexibility
• Appears as shiny blue “glass”
• Located at the end if all long bones, the nose, trachea, larynx, in the ribs
Cells:
• Chondroblasts:
• Chomdrocytes:
• Chondroblasts: produce matrix
• Chomdrocytes: are surrounded by matrix (occupy small spaces called lacunae)
Where are Chondrocytes found?
Within lacunae
Elastic cartilage:
•Function?
• Location?
• Maintains the shape of a structure, & allowing flexibility
• Located at the epiglottis
Fibrocartilage:
•Function?
• Location?
• It’s strength absorbs compression shock
• Located at intervertebral discs, & knee joint discs
What are two growth patterns of cartilage?
• Interstital growth: From within the cartilage
• Appositional growth: From the end of the cartilage
