What is the definition of haemochromatosis?
Multisystemic disorder of dysregulated dietary iron absorption and increased iron release from macrophages
What is the cause of haemochromatosis?
Autosomal recessive disorder
What is the presentation of haemochromatosis?
Often incidental finding or prompted by diagnosis in family member
Fatigue, weakness, lethargy, arthralgias, hepatomegaly, diabetes, impotence, bronzing of skin
What is the management of haemochromatosis?
Lifestyle modification - avoid iron or iron-containing supplements
Late stage - blood letting
What are the complications of haemochromatosis?
Cirrhosis, diabetes, chronic CHF, hepatocellular carcinoma, hypogonadism, bone loss
