Haematopoiesis Flashcards
What is haematopoiesis?
The production of red blood cells
Where is the primary site of haematopoiesis?
The bone marrow
Where do red blood cells mature?
The thymus
What is positive selection of WBC’s?
Ensuring that their receptors are functional
Which part of the thymus does positive selection occur?
The cortex
What is negative selection of WBC’s?
Ensuring that the cells do not self react
Where does negative selection of WBC’s occur?
Within the medulla
What happens during double negative stage I-II
Thymic epithelial cell becomes t cell precursor, Slowly expressing receptors
What happens during double negative stage III
Full expression of the T cell receptor
What happens during double negative stage IV
The cell will have both CD4 and CD8 receptors where it will interact with the MHC class 1 receptor, Causing it to become either a CD4 or CD8
What is the lymphatic system?
Where plasma from the blood seeps through the capillaries before returning to the blood
What is typically found inside of the lymph nodes?
Foreign antibodies
How is the lymph moved to the lymph nodes?
Muscle movement
Where are the germinal centres found in the body?
Within the lymph nodes
What happens within the germinal centers?
B cells become plasma cells
