What is the diagnosis for a patient with excess bleeding and bruising with low platelet count and normal coagulation screen?
Immune thrombocytopenia - destruction of platelets via a autoimmune route
What is the first line treatment for immune thrombocytopenia?
Oral corticosteroids
What is the second line treatment for immune thrombocytopenia?
Splenectomy
General rule - when does macrocytosis tend to occur? and give examples (2)?
When there is a problem with RBC synthesis such as in B12 or folate deficiency.
General rule - when does microcytosis tend to occur? and give examples (2)?
When there is a problem with the synthesis of haemoglobin. Iron deficiency or thalassemia/sickle cell.
What deficiency is peripheral neuropathy related to?
Vitamin B12
