Haber Process Flashcards
Describe how the haber process works ?
-First methane and air are put in
-Next the gasses are mixed
-Then subjected to very high pressure at 200 atm
-Next they are subjected to high temperatures of 400*c and an Iron catalyst is used here
- it is then cooled down slightly but hydrogen and and nitrogen are still gassed
- ammonia is condensed at is boiling point and comes out as a liquid
- the nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled
What does the haber process make ?
Fertilizer
What does the Haber process make ?
Fertilizer
What are the conditions for the Haber process ?
200 atm so high pressure
High temperature or 400*c
What are the compromises ?
Temperature- lower the temp so the equilibrium shirts to the RHS as the forward reaction is exothermic but not to low as it requires activation energy
Pressure- increase pressure so the equilibrium shifts to the RHS because there are fewer molecule but it cannot be to high
What is the risk with the Haber process ?
If the pressure is too high it can cause a massive explosion
