Calculating Rates Of Reaction Flashcards

1
Q

What are the two equations of rates of reactions ?

A

Depending on the question it’s either
Rate of reaction= quantity of product formed/ time taken (seconds)
Or
Rate of reaction= quantity of reactant used/ time taken (seconds)

Q

How do you calculate the mean rate of reaction over a certain period ?

A

Amount of product formed or reactant used
Over
Amount of time but in seconds

Q

What do you do if it says calculate the mean rate from something like 20 seconds- 80 seconds ?

A

-So you do a line up from both 20 and 80 and then cross to the Y when it meets the line
- go across to the Y and find the amount of thing for both let’s say at 20 it’s 26g of product procured but at 80 seconds it’s 50g
- then you do 80-20 which is 60 seconds and 50-26 which is 24
- lastly you do amount of product formed/ reactant used over the amount of time
- so here it’s 24/60 which is 0.4

Q

Why would a reaction react fast ?

A

Large number of reactant molecules reacting to form a product

Q

Why would a reaction slow down ?

A

A lot of reactants have already reacted meaning fewer reactant molecules available to react
