H.1 Intro to Fungi Flashcards
Fungi
Group of spore-producing organisms who feed on organic matter
Chitin
Protein-carbohydrate that’s found in cell walls of fungi
Hyphae
Filamentous fungal growth that makes up the mycelium
Mycelium
Mass of hyphae
Fruiting body
Reproductive structures produced by fungi (i.e. mushroom)
Septate Hyphae
Hyphae that are divided into cells via cross walls called SEPTA
Aseptate Hyphae
Have no individual cells and instead have many nuclei flowing freely within the cytoplasm
Saprophytic
Organisms that live off the decaying remains of others
Bioremediation
Use of naturally or deliberately introducing microorganisms or other life forms to consume as well as break down environmental pollutants
Decomposers
Organisms that live off dead matter and return the nutrients back to the soil
Parasitic
Organisms that live in or on host organisms and gets food from or via the expense of the host
Haustoria
Specialized hyphae that grow into the host
Mutualistic
Relationship between organisms of two different species where each organism benefits
Budding
Asexual reproduction where an organism grows off an outgrowth of the parent
Fragmentation
Asexual reproduction where a piece of the parent breaks off and a new organism is formed
