G.1 Intro To Protists Flashcards
Ingestive protists
Protists that engulf/ ingest bacteria and other small particles (like humans)
Photosynthetic protists
Plant-like protist that get their nutrients from converting sunlight into energy using photosynthesis (like plants)
Absorptive protists
Protists that absorb food molecules across their cell membranes (like fungi)
Plankton
“Floaters,” these are organisms that can’t swim well and end up being carried along by ocean currents
Phytoplankton
Photosynthetic plankton (autotrophic)
Zooplankton
Animal plankton (heterotrophic), meaning they gain their nutrients by eating other plankton
Herbivorous
Feeding on plants/ eating plants
Carnivorous
Animal - feeding on other animals
Plant - able to trap and digest insects
Theory of Endosymbiosis
Theory that states that eukaryotic cells are derived from prokaryotic cells based on the fact that the mitochondria and chloroplasts are the same size as prokaryotic cells. Suggests that prokaryotes weren’t digested by the eukaryotes that ingested them and eventually became organelles
