H-Manufacturing Flashcards

1
Q

Maintaining safety in commercial manufacture?

A

-The duration of the job, carrying out the same repeated task for a long or a short time frame, could it lead to repetitive strain injury or safety implications from boredom.
-What hazards can be controlled before the manufacture starts.
-What hazards will be introduced when the manufacture starts.
-If there safe spaces to load and unload material, machinery and equipment, are the safe zones clearly labelled.
-Is there a manual handeling issue and if so has the correct training been completed.
-Will machinery and other tools be maintained.
-Are the appropriate safety gaurds fitted and do they work properly.
-Is all the nesscicary personal protective equipment provided to protect the workers.
-Emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits should be available and has training been provided for emergecy procedures.

Q

Three main forms of pototypes?

A

Visual prototypes- A sample or model that shows the overall shape and size of the product but does not usually have any working parts, the martials used will not be those that will be used in the final design, they are used to test the visal impact and enable designers and clients to suggest improvements.
Proof of concept prototypes- They show the key functionality and main technical aspects of the design, does not need to be made from production grade materials but does need to allow the design team to test the functions, can be given out to trial groups to gain feedback in real world use.
Production prototype- this gives a representation of how the mass produced product should look and how it should function. The materials should be as close to production grade as possible unless it is not economically viable, they can be tested to further refine the product prior to the final product going into mass production.

Q

One-off/Batch/Mass prouction?

A

One-off- Designed and manufactured for a single, specific situation. They are mostly hand manufactured and are described as made to measure. Machinery is usually set up for the task required and then adjusted for the next task, itis therefore labour intensive and requires high skill.
Batch- A set number of products are made at one time. Machines are often set up o produce a specific task, and many workers work on a prduction line and carry out different tasks on a job rotation between machinery.
Mass- Large quantities of the same standard product are made, used for products the consumer uses everyday and there is therefore a high demand. It utilises automotive manufacturing process where possible, and does not need workers with high skill.

Q

What is tolerance?

A

An acceptable range of dimensional variation that still allows proper function of the product.

Q

Measuring aids-Jigs?

A

Used to control the motion of a tool relative to the workpiece, it removes the need for marking out, the work does not require a high skill level and helps to reduce waste

Q

Measuring aid-Fixtures?

A

Robust frames with clamps that are used to hold the workpiece firmly in place whilst the manufacturing process takes place but it does not guide the tool. It improves safety and makes it easier to machine complex or heavy components but you need to ensure that each piece is clamped into the exact same position to ensure consistency.

Q

Measuring aids-Templates?

A

A rigid shape or pattern used to transfer a design onto a workpiece, it is normally held securely into position whilst the outline is traced. They ensure repeated accuracy and reduce human error.
