the author emphasises the strength and power of the hawk by using vivid language., and through this shocks the author.
“as if someone punched me hard” simile emphasises the power of the hawk and unpredictable nature and through
“enormous, enormous hawk” epizeuxis hyperbolizes narrators shock at coming to face with this large hawk due to its magnitude.
“conjuring trick” “a fallen angel” these listed metaphors convey a supernatural like image of the hawk underscoring its power.

The writer conveys shock when she encounters the wrong bird which was not intended for her.
“Oh.” single word paragrpah conveys to the reader the agonising realisation of the author creating pathos for the reader.
“This was the younger one.” Short simple sentences build up speed while reading this and through this illustrate the emotions rushing through her head.
“This was not my hawk” simple sentence to end the passage conveys the sudden realisation that while all of the other things are true the obvious simplicity of this sentence creates a more powerful message of sadness and reality for the author.

The author conveys panic at the end of the passage by changing the tone from sad to hectic.

” slow panic” juxtaposition of high tension with “slow” creates an unfamiliarity for the reade, conveying the authors crazed head.
“she’s more beautiful than the first one. Isn’t she?”constant questioning implies her thoughts are not completely stable as she has to question everything.
“But I… could I.” elipsis conveys how the author cant think straight due to her emotions
