danger of a single story Flashcards
paragraph 1
the author conveys the difference in culture between the stories that she has heard and what she grew up with
“all my characters were white haired and blue eyed.” She uses humour to build rapport to relate to the audience.
“they played in the snow, they ate apples and they talked a lot about the weather.” She implements listing to infer how many different things hse has been used to and the fact she is talking aobut the matter conveys the unusual nature of it to herself.
“we didn’t have snow, we are mangos.” Once again achieves listing but this time is used for a different meaning to now infer the difference in her culture.
paragraph 2
the author infers to the reader the impact that one story can have where it can cause you to have clear cut view on something which can often not be very good for you
“how impressionable and vulnerable we are in the face of a story.” emotive language evokes an emotional response from the audience that conveys how impressionable people are.
“it saved me from having a single story of what books are. “ verb “saved” infers the problems that are caused from having a single sotry about something.
“there poverty was my single story of them” this temporal shift conveys the serious nature of having a view on things can be damaging towards others.
paragraph 3
she conveys how single stories have affected her life negatively by assumptions made by people from there single stories.
“shocked” strong highly emotive verb conveys how strong peoples views are created by stories.
“tribal music” This conveys how these stories can be dangerous as they can cause people pain by predjudice.
“no possibility” anaphora emphasises how there is only one way of looking at a culture via a story and this idea of “possibility” conveys diversity however it is clear there is no diversity as there is “no possibility” conveying how she is negatively affected by people thinking she is one certain way.
alhtough she earlier conveys to the reader the negativity of the danger of a single story there is a shift in tone towards the end when she conveys the brilliance of many stories
“a kind of paradise was regained.” metaphor building on the notion of restoration and hope that is created when people gain many stories,
“stories can break the dignity of a person, but stories can also repair the dignity of a person.” juxtaposition convey the breadth of lessons they teach people and how they embody life therefore implying that stories should not have one meaning as life doesn’t.
“Stories matter. Many Stories matter.” repitition conveys the necessity and short sentences conveys how she wants to clearly covney her message to the audience.
