H-10 Task 1 Flashcards
what is the basic purpose of a deck?
Provide a level outdoor livingspace
what is a deck that isn’t provided with a roof?
referred to as a sundeck
when a deck is elevated to at least one storey above ground it is called?
referred to as a balcony
what is a deck called with a roof and part of an entrance?
referred to as a porch
what is another term for porch?
veranda, typically is much longer than deep and will run the full length of the building face
other than being attached to a building, what else can a deck be with the building system?
A deck can be apart of the buildings roof system, example is a garage with a flat roof and use that area as a deck
the deck has two purposes, act as a deck and as a roof
BC Building Code require railings when the deck is elevated more than?
600mm above adjacent surfaces
decks need to be built strong enough to withstand?
either floor loads for living areas or local snow loads, which ever is greater
what are the two reasons decks should be built strong and securely fastened to the main structure?
Been known to collapse when used as a venue for a large group, and to separate when impacted by a large snow load (snow sliding off a metal roof)
what are a decks structural components?
foundation, posts, beams, and floor joists
what are common materials for decking construction?
what about railings materials?
Pressure treated preserved wood, naturally durable wood such as cedar, and wood-plastic composites
wood, metal, and glass
how much lower are decks built from the floor level inside the building?
and why?
150mm lower than the floor they serve, this is done to prevent water seepage into the interior living space due to ice damming on the deck surface
what are typical foundations for decks?
what the posts will sit on
Concrete pilings, pad blocks, or strip footings
what size are common dimensional lumber posts?
most common are 6x6 (140mm x 140mm)
what are the dimensional sizes for concrete columns? rectangular and round
dimensional size for steel posts?
200mm x 200mm for rectangular, 230mm diameter round
73mm diameter steel posts
how can you reduce clear spans of structural members?
Beams and joists
by slightly cantilevering the beams and joists
List three ways the connections for deck joists and beams can be made?
by using fasteners, connecting brackets, and hangers
brackets and hangers are galvanized
galvanized nails or corrosion resistant screws must be used
how can you attach the deck to the building?
fastening a ledger board or using joist hangers.
use lag screws, nails, or solid wall fasteners for attaching ledgers
what is the concern when using a ledger without spacers against the house wall?
trapped moisture leading to rot (unless protected from moisture by flashing)
why can’t you support (attach) a deck to a cantilevered floor rim joist?
Rim joist is usually only supported by nails into the ends of floor joists and is not strong enough to hang a deck from
what are the dimensional lumber used for decking?
5/4” radius edge-treated lumber, or 2x4 cedar
what are advantages of Wood Plastic Composite decking?
they won’t twist, check, crack, splinter, or rot
what is the gap you provide between decking boards?
3-6mm provides adequate air movement and drainage
how long should decking fasteners be?
long enough to penetrate the joists by at least the decking thickness
for watertight decks acting as a roof, how are the posts of handrails attached?
should be face attached instead of top mounted to maintain watertightness
why is anchorage important for high level decks?
because of possible wind uplift
