Who should be screen for bacterial vaginosis?
- Symptomatic patients.
- Those at risk of preterm birth from 12-16 weeks gestation.
In pregnancy when is test of cure recommended after treatment?
After one month of treatment.
For patients at high risk of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy which route of treatment is recommended?
Oral Metronidazole or Clindamycin.
Which organism is responsible for the most sexually transmitted infection?
Trichomonas vaginalis.
Which test is recommended for detecting Trichomonas vaginalis?
PCR - sensitivity 95-100%
What is the treatment regime for Trichomonas vaginalis?
Metronidazole 500mg BiD for 7 days.
OR
Metronidazole 2g once.
- Note meta analysis suggests that single dose treatment is has a higher failure rate hence multidose regime is recommended.
- Note that no test of cure recommended.
What treatment is recommended for resistant Trichomonas vaginalis?
Tinidazole 2g once.
What is the recommended screening for syphilis in pregnancy?
- In the first trimester.
- Repeat at 28 to 32 weeks in patients at high risk of ongoing infection or in endemic areas.
- All women who deliver a stillborn > 20 weeks gestation.
