Gyn Procedures Flashcards
What are the advantages of transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasounds? What accounts for this difference?
- transabdominal ultrasound has a higher frequency and therefore enhanced resolution
- transadbominal ultrasound has a lower frequency and therefore an increased depth of penetration
What procedures should be used to evaluated AUB?
- begin with a transvaginal ultrasound
- if this is inadequate, process to a hysteroscopy
What is a sonohysterography?
a method of ultrasound in which saline is infused into the uterus and acts as a contrast agent for ultrasound
Describe a hysterosalpingography.
- a method used to evaluate the patency of the fallopian tubes and the shape of the uterine cavity
- it begins with injection of a radiopaque contrast material into the uterus and fluoroscopy is then used to determine whether contrast material spills into the peritoneal cavity
What are indications for dilation and curettage?
- abnormal uterine bleeding
- incomplete or missed abortion
- inability to perform EMB in the office setting
- postmenopausal bleeding
- suspected endometrial polpy
How is second trimester abortion performed?
with dilation of the cervix followed by the use of destructive grasping forceps to remove the pregnancy
What is atelectasis?
a pulmonary complication of gynecologic surgeries when patients do not take large inspiratory breaths due to abdominal discomfort
Why is incentive spirometry used in gynecology post-operative care?
it encourages deep inspiration despite abdominal comfort and is a preventative measure against atelectasis
