Q

hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)

A

Women from hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) families have an increased risk of both endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer. There are a number of defined mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes associated with the HNPCC syndrome. Tumors associated with HNPCC typically show loss of mismatch repair protein expression on immunohistochemistry (IHC). Such a finding on IHC would prompt the need for genetic testing for HNPCC mutations.
