Verbal guidance

A
  • Provided by coach or significant other
  • Used to describe and explain how to perform an activity
  • Often used alongside visual guidance
  • Advantages: Reinforce good movements and identify errors to be corrected; can hold attention of performer; used to motivate
  • Disadvantages: Can lead to information ‘overload’; if inaccurate, skill will be hindered

Visual guidance

A
  • Images or demonstrations used to help a learner
  • Coach should highlight key points of the movement (cueing)
  • Advantages: Easy to create mental picture; skill can be seen at different stages; encourages observational learning
  • Disadvantages: If incorrect,bad habits could form; accurate demonstration may not be available; may be unclear or too quick

manual and mechanical guidance

A
  • Physical support by another person or mechanical devices
  • Involve performer being physically directed by another person
  • Advantages: Helps with confidence and sense of safety; can be used to isolate a skill action
  • Disadvantages: can be over- restrictive; can lead to false kinasesthesis
