Guest Lecture Flashcards
Preschool and primary scale age
2.6- 7.7
Children and youth scale age
6-16.11
Why different assessments for different age ranges?
Geared towards their skills
Normed for kids of this age range
Norms for different countries - Canadian and US norms, speech is different
Overlap in age between the two tests why?
Testing limits essentially - 7 where cognitive capacity is slightly lower, some kids with ASD a bit delayed - test with a younger age range test
WAIS IV age
Older youth and adults 16-90:11
Can use it for someone over 90 but there wouldnt be norms for that
WASI-IV
6-90 - abbreviated scale
Full assessment - 2 and a half for typically developing, 3-6 for delay
Testing the general intelligence and cognitive ability when time is limited - 30 min
why update questions?
Update the questions because children wont know what it is - whats a stamp - no longer valid for kids of the generation
Dont know what a calculator is
Verbal Comprehension
Vocabulary
Meaning of words
Ex. What does assemble mean? - score for that child with probing question - what do you mean by that
Verbal Comprehension
Vocabulary
Similarities
Information
Comprehension
Verbal Comprehension
Similarities
A link between two words
Ex. how are blue and green alike
Verbal Comprehension
Information
General information about the world
Broad range of knowledge
Ex. who was cleopatra - you either know it or you dont
Verbal Comprehension
Comprehension
Understanding of general principles and social dituations
Ex. why do we clean our hands before we eat - sick germs, social norms - not one or two tests - how well can you reason
Sometimes there is a teaching trial
Understand the concept of what youre trying to get them to do - supposed to tell you how they are similar
Basal
minimum number of questions you can get right - 2 in a row correct before you keep going
Celing
- 0’s in a row, gifted - go on about it
Visual Spatial
Block design
Ability to quickly and accurately re-create a design using blocks
Ex. show a participant a picture - give them blocks
As quickly as you can
Visual Spatial
Visual puzzles
Complete a puzzle using only 3 possible shapes
Ex. recreate with blocks - show her w teaching trial, support in first trial then see their understanding
Pull up a pattern by looking at a picture
Fluid Reasoning
Matrix reasoning
Ability to detect a pattern within a matrix series
Example: show a participant a pattern- have them identify the missing piece - from 5 options which fills in the blank
Fluid Reasoning
Matrix reasoning
Ability to detect a pattern within a matrix series
Example: show a participant a pattern- have them identify the missing piece - from 5 options which fills in the blank
Fluid Reasoning
Figure weights
One of the hardest ones for kids to get
Ability to use both inductive and deductive logic through having to balance abstract objects on a scale
Ex. show a participant a scale with a square or circle on either side
Two green stars weigh the same as the yellow squares - what should go on a scale with one
Fluid Reasoning
Picture concepts
Ability to identify common themes among contextually relevant stimuli
Ex. show participant pictures have them identify pictures that go together
Support at first to teach
Fluid Reasoning
Arithmetic
Mentally solve a series of arithmetic problems
Ex. lou has 6 baseballs, he loses 3. How many baseballs does he have left
Working Memory
Digit span
Ability to repeat a string of numbers in either a forward or backward fashion
Ex. say a list of numbers and have them repeat
Say them in increasing order form being
scrambled
Count backwards
Working Memory
Picture span
Ability to use visual working memory
Ex. show participant pattern. Have them remember the order of pictures in the pattern
Working Memory
Letter-number sequencing
Ability to remember a sequence of numbers and letters
Ex. say a list of numbers and letters - have them re-order and repeat
Processing Speed
Coding
Ability use a legend to copy as many symbols as they can in a set amount of time
Ex. show participant the legend. Have them copy the symbols
2 min to complete based on the legend - have to go in order and finish as quickly as they can
Processing Speed
Symbol search
Ability to scan and search a group and indicate whether one of the symbols matches the target
Ex. show participant pattern. Have them circle the matching or similar symbol
Same symbol on same line cross out yes
Dont see it cross out no
Processing Speed
Cancellation
Ability to identify and mark recognizable imagery within a time frame
Ex. show participant an array of shapes and symbols - eliminate the target symbols
Cross out as many stars as you can
