guapo Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Process where plants turn sunlight into energy
6CO2+6H20->6O2 +C6H12O6
What is glucose?
Energy source in most carbohydrates and important for metabolism
What are carbohydrates?
Contains carbon, water, and oxygen, 1:2:1 ratio, makes up starches and sugars
What are autotrophs?
Organisms that can turn simple substances into complex substances (IE with photosynthesis)
What are heterotrophs?
Organisms that cannot make their own food, relying on results of autotrophs
What are pigments?
Substances showing color by absorbing light and reflecting said color
What is chlorophyll?
Green pigment found in most plants
What is ATP?
Energy source for most cell actions, stored in hydrogen bonds
What is ADP?
Same as ATP with one less phosphate group
What is AMP?
Same as ADP with one less phosphate group
What are light reactions?
Light is absorbed and the energy is used to make ATP, first part of photosynthesis formula
What are dark/synthesis reactions?
Multiple reactants combine into one; second part of photosynthesis formula
What is the Kreb’s cycle?
Process of making energy via aerobic respiration
What is glycolysis?
Glucose broken down by enzymes, releasing energy
What is respiration?
Process where glucose and oxygen make carbon dioxide and water, releasing energy
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration using oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration not using oxygen
What is fermentation?
Breaking down of substance using yeast or bacteria
What is lactic acid?
Occurs with anaerobic respiration
What is alcoholic fermentation?
Converts sugars into cell energy, leaving behind ethanol
What is homeostasis?
Steady equilibrium between compounds
What is the law of conservation of mass/energy?
Energy cannot be destroyed or created
What is chromatography?
Separation of a mixture
