What is mitosis?
Cell division, helps to fix damaged tissue and form the human body
What is cytokinesis?
Last phase of mitosis; two identical cells are fully formed
What is the cell cycle?
Process of a cell splitting into two identical cells
What is prophase?
Beginning of mitosis; nuclear membrane disappears, chromosomes begin to move away from center
What is metaphase?
Spindles form, chromosomes line up single file in middle of cell
What is anaphase?
Chromosomes separate into chromatids and are pulled toward opposite ends of cell
What are chromosomes?
Structure containing genes/DNA in a cell
What is a centromere?
Connects two chromatid together to make a chromosome
What are spindles?
Divide chromosomes during cell division
What is a metaphase plate?
Region equally far from both ends of cells
What is heredity?
Passing of characteristics from one to another
What are genetics?
Properties/characteristics of an organism
What is self-pollination?
When a flower pollinates itself with its own pollen
What is cross-pollination?
When pollen comes from one flower and moves to another flower
What is a trait?
Characteristic determined by genes
What is a purebred?
Bred from a family of the same breed/variety
What is a hybrid?
Bred from family of two different breeds/variety
What is a gene?
Nucleotides transferred from parent to offspring
Dominant vs recessive?
Dominant: two or one capital letters. Recessive: no capital letters
What is segregation?
When a parent cell splits in two (IE when Aa becomes A and a)
What is homozygous?
The same; IE gg or GG
What is chiasmata?
Location of where chromosomes cross over
What is meiosis?
Creation of zygotes from gametes
What is heterozygous?
Different; IE Gg
