GSP Flashcards
What are the two assumptions that Genre approaches to text rely on according to Hyland?
- The features of a similar group of texts depend on the social context of their creation and use.
- These features can be described in a way that relates a text to others like it and to the choices and constraints of the text producers.
What does GSP stand for?
Generic Structure Potential
According to Hasan how can text be defined?
⚫ Text can be defined as language that is functional, or
language that is doing some job in context
⚫ Text as product and process
What are the characteristics of text?
- Unity of structure
- Unity of texture
What is the structure of a texte constructed of?
Separate events or elements
What questions must be answered in order to figure out a registers generic structure?
- What elements or events must occur in the text? (This element is obligatory)
2, What elements can occur in the text? (optional) - WHERE MUST the elements or events occur? (fixed)
- WHERE CAN the elements or events occur? (flexible)
- HOW OFTEN can the elements or events occur? (unique or recursive)
What is part of the GSP?
- Obligatory and optional elements of a text’s structure
- Sequence of elements with respect to each other
- Whether elements are recursive or non-recursive
What is important when considering the Generic Structure Potential?
The GSP always refers to an entire genre, not individual texts
Once the potential is defined for the genre, individual texts:
- must have all mandatory elements
- must follow any mandatory sequence
