What is the Field of Discourse?
Field is linked to the experiential metafuntion and describes the activity (i.e. what is going on) in the text.
How can we ask for the activity within the Field of Discourse?
- What is the activity?
- What is the overall topic/subject matter of the activity?
- What is the purpose of the activity?
What is the Tenor of Discourse?
Tenor is linked to the interpersonal metafuntion and describes the participants involved in a text, as well as their roles and relationships.
How can we ask for the Participants in the Tenor of Discourse?
- Who is involved?
- Who is the addressee?
How can we ask for the Social Distance in the Tenor of Discourse?
- What do the participants have in common?
- Do they have a shared background?
What is important when considering the social distance within the Tenor of Discourse?
That there is always a distance. It can only be high or low.
What is the Mode of Discourse?
Mode is linked to the textual metafuntion and describes the organization of language in a text, and the elements of text construction.
How can we ask for the Language role within the Mode of Discourse?
- How central is the language to the activity?
- Is the language planned or unplanned?
How can we ask which Channel and Medium are being used?
How does the addressee receive the text?
1. Graphic or phonic (Channel)
2. Written or spoken (Medium)
How can we ask for the type of process sharing within the Mode of Discourse?
Is it a dialogue or a monologue? (Can the addressee share in the process of text creation as it unfolds?)
How can we ask for the social roles of the participants within the Tenor of Discourse?
- Is it an equal or unequal relationship? (Is there any difference between the participants in terms of power or
expertise?) - If it is unequal who is control of the situation?
What is the contextual configuration of a text?
Any constellation of the three variables field,
tenor and mode result in a particular
CONTEXTUAL CONFIGURATION (CC).
What is a register?
Essentially, a register is the situational context for
texts with the same CC
