Growth and Motor FINAL Flashcards
Change in absolute size and change in relative size
Growth
- Gametes go together to form blastocyst then to embryo
Prenatal Development
When do you typically know when you are pregnant?
5 weeks
0-8 weeks, genes dictate development, precise, predictable pattern
Three tissue layers: mesoderm, endoderm, ectoderm
Embryonic Period
8 weeks - birth: approx. 40 weeks (9 mos)
Fetal Period
0-13 weeks - development from cells to miniature human (best time to determine expected dude date because development is almost universal) HEART BEAT
First Trimester
13-26 weeks - development of body systems (organs) MOTOR ACTIVITY
Second Trimester
27-40 weeks (rate of growth increases - 5 months) - growth with minimal changes - MYELINATION OF BRAIN
Third Trimester
Growth via Increase in number of cells
Hyperplasia
Growth via Increase in size of cells
Hypertrophy
Cephalocaudal (growth direction)
Head to Toe
Brain configuration nearly complete
12 weeks
Motor activity
16 weeks
Myelination of spinal cord
20 weeks
Respiratory - like movement begins (a child will not survive if born prior to this)
24 weeks
Retina layered and light receptive
28 weeks
Weight increases more than length
32 weeks
Ossification (bone formation) in femur
36 weeks
Myelination of brain begins
40 weeks
Blood interacts through the umbilical cord, transfer through placenta
Fetal Nourishment
- Girls grow earlier, but not as tall as boys
- Boys grow rapidly over a longer period of time
- Girls Mature first
Postnatal Development
