Group One (alkali Metals) Flashcards
Group 1 reactivity
More reactive the further you go down
- more electrons
- more shells
- distance between outer shell and inner nucleus increases
- more shielding by inner electron
- easier to lose an electron
-
Group 1 melting and boiling point trends
Decrease as you move down the group
Lithium and oxygen reaction
Bright purple/ pink flame , makes a white powdery solid
Sodium and oxygen reaction
Yellow flame and explodes, makes a white solid
Potassium and oxygen reaction
Vigorous purple flame and explodes , white powder left
Lithium and water reaction
Fizzes with smoke reaction happens on the surface
Sodium with water reaction
Fizzes with orange flame and explodes, turns into a ball moves fast and floats
Potassium with water reaction
Lilac flame and fizzes more, moves quicker, explodes faster
