5 Multi-components of Group Cohesion
1. Social-oriented:
- Attraction to one another and to group as a whole
- “I have many friends in this group”
2. Task-oriented:
- Commitment to working together as a coordinated unit in the pursuing of the group’s goals
- “We work great together, I do my best”
3. Collective:
- Consensual identification with the group based on shared identity and belongings to the group
- “We are like a family”; “United we are strong!”
4. Emotional:
- Emotional intensity in the group and it’s individuals
- “This group has team spirit”
5. Structural:
- Integrity based on relationships between group members
- the group fits together to make a whole thing, all members feel accepted
- “Together we are the winning team! / We leave as one and return as one!”

= EXPECTANCY * INSTRUMENTALITY * VALENCE
Def.: Motivational force:
- Extent to which person is likely to engage in certain course of action
1. Expectancy: - Belief that increase in effort => increase in performance
- Effort -> Performance
- Instrumentality:
- Belief that increased performance => certain outcomes
- Performace -> Outcome
- Valence:
- Extent to which the outcome is desirable
- Outcome -> Reward
All three factors must be present to motivate employees effectly
