Group 7- the halogens Flashcards
What are group 7 metals referred to as?
The Halogens.
What happens to the halogens as you go down group 7?
- They become less reactive.
- Higher melting point.
- Higher boiling point.
What are the halogens?
They are all non-metals with coloured vapours.
What is Flourine?
A very reactive poisonous yellow gas.
What is chlorine?
A fairly reactive poisonous dense green gas.
What is Bromine?
A dense poisonous red-brown volatile liquid.
What is Iodine?
A dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour.
What do all halogens exist as?
Molecules which are pairs of atoms.
What do the Halogens form with metals?
ionic bonds (1-) called halides.
What will a more reactive halogen do to a less reactive one?
The more reactive halogen will displace the less reactive halogen, from an aqueous solution of its salt.
